The Relais il Cestello is located in the old Telegram House, a building overlooking a charming little Piazza – the Pizza di Cestello. The Piazza and the historic building are reasons alone for staying here but add to this the fascinating south bank area where the hotel is located, the clean, comfortable rooms and the reasonable price and what you get is one of the best three stars in this part of the city. A great base for sights such as the Palazzo Pitti, Santo Spirito and Masaccio’s peerless frescoes in the church of Santa Maria del’Carmine.

The Hotel Castri is just a stones throw away from Santa Maria Novella Train station and also the Fortezza da Basso congress centre. The hotel occupies two fine 19th Century buildings which overlook the spacious Piazza Indipendenza. The hotel has around 70 air-conditioned single and double guest rooms but its best feature is the enormous garden – a real luxury this close to the historic centre of Florence.

The lovely Hotel Annalena steals a march on many rivals because of its unique views over the Boboli Gardens behind the famous Palazzo Pitti. The area around the Palazzo on the south side of city near the Ponte Vecchio is one of the most fascinating quarters of Florence and the three star Annalena makes a perfect base for exploration. The hotel itself is a former Palazzo and the hotel is named after Annalena, a widow of the powerful Medici family who turned the former private residence into a convent for young widows.

The fantastic value Hotel Centro is, as its name would suggest, is centrally located close to all of Florence’s major attractions. The hotel is housed within a Renaissance Palazzo which was formerly the residence of Raphael, who many feel is the greatest of all Renaissance painters. The perfect location for getting to know the San Lorenzo area of the city with its famous market and art galleries and churches (including of course the Accademia which houses Michelangelo’s sculpture of David).

The Annabella is a neat, basic but comfortable two star near the main train station of Santa Maria Novella and the remarkable Renaissance church of the same name. It is run by a Florentine family who have been in the hotel trade for over four generations. Stay here if you want good, basic value in a central location.
